Grade Nine Math: 2017- 2018

Course Communication Plan

Sydney Academy Joanne MacGillivary

The Grade Nine Math program will follow the Atlantic Canada Math Curriculum and includes its specific outcomes as outlined in the curriculum guide.  Key mathematical processes will focus on communication, problem solving and the use of technology, making connections as well visualizations, sound mathematical reasoning and mental math and estimation.

Course Requirements

-Students  are required to come to each and every Math class with the following;  a binder, loose-leaf, a pencil, ruler & scientific calculator. No cell phones will be permitted in class.

-Students should review their work each evening and complete any work not finished in class as well as any additional homework that is assigned.

-Attendance is compulsory; any student absence must be phoned into the office.

-If  students  are absent they must get caught up on their own time.  Students  are responsible for keeping  binders up-to-date, completing overdue homework assignments and/or making arrangements to re-write a missed assessment.  There may be exceptions if alternative arrangements have been made in advance.

Course Outline

The Grade Nine Math Curriculum will include the following topics:

  • Powers and Exponent Laws
  • Rational Numbers
  • Square Roots and Surface Area
  • Linear Relations
  • Polynomials
  • Linear Equations and Inequalities
  • Similarity and Transformations
  • Circle Geometry
  • Probability and Statistics

Course Evaluation

Tests & Quizzes 40%

Assignments (Includes class work, homework, observations, projects) 30%

Summative Evaluations (exams and cumulative tests) 30%

Students will write a cumulative exam in January and June, both worth 10% of their final grade. Two cumulative tests will be administered throughout the year, one in each semester.

Parent Teacher Communication

  • Report cards will be sent home with students after each of the reporting terms.  These written evaluations keep parents up-to-date on how the student is progressing throughout the academic school year. Parents are also encouraged to attend Parent-Teacher conferences. These conferences provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss student’s strengths, areas of growth, and academic and personal performances.
  • Parents may also periodically check the parent portal to see the marks for tests and assignments and to see if any evaluations have been missed or assessments  not handed in.   Logins for the parent portal are available from administration.
  • Telephone calls, emails and notes may be used to share information regarding a student’s performance.
  • Test dates and assignment dates will be listed on the SA homework page.

Review & Make-Up Sessions

  • Math review sessions will be provided at lunch when requested.  Arrangements to write any missed assessments or tests (with an excused absence) must be made and completed within a week of said assessment. A mark of zero will be entered into the parent portal until such time as the assessment has been completed and graded.  Unexcused absences during an assessment will result in a mark of zero.
