French Program

French Programs at Sydney Academy

French Programs at Sydney Academy will give you an opportunity to continue with French from Middle School program, whether it's French Immersion, Integrated French, or Core French.

Grade 9 (2018-2019)
This year, Sydney Academy will be offering the Integrated French Program for students entering Grade 9.  This program will allow students to prepare for the Sydney Academy Integrated French Program as well as the IB Program.  Students will study two courses where French is the language of instruction (French Language Arts and Citizenship).

Grade 8 students who wish to be considered for this program should indicate their intention on their course registration sheets.

Grades 10 to 12 - Integrated French Certificate
Students from Grades 10 to 12 are required to take six courses where French is the language of instruction in order to receive the Integrated French Certificate at the end of Grade 12.  Students must take Pre-IB 10 and IB French 11 and 12 as the French Language Arts credits and three other courses taught in French.

The following courses are offered:
  • SA Pre-IB French 10
  • Art dramatique 10
  • IB French 11
  • Modes de vie actifs 11
  • IB French 12
  • Géographie Planetaire 12

Students enrolled in the Integrated French Program at Sydney Academy are eligible to write the DELF test (French proficiency test).  Students will take the test during their Grade 12 year.

A student may take both the Integrated French Certificate and IB French courses concurrently.

It is to be noted that students do not need to be registered in the full IB Diploma to be eligible to take IB French.  As well, students who are registered in only IB French, who are not a part of the Integrated French Program, are not eligible to write the DELF test at the end of Grade 12.

IB Bilingual Diploma
Of the courses taken to receive the IB Diploma, the following may be taken in French to earn a bilingual designation:
  • SA Pre-IB French 10 (recommended)
  • IB French 11
  • IB Histoire 11
  • IB French 12
  • IB Histoire 12

The following allows a diploma candidate to earn both a bilingual diploma, and an Integrated French Certificate:
  • SA Pre-IB French 10
  • Art dramatique 10
  • IB French 11
  • IB Histoire 11
  • IB French 12
  • IB Histoire 12

Students earning both a bilingual diploma and an Integrated French Certificate are eligible to write the DELF test (French proficiency test) during their Grade 12 year.
