Medals to be Awarded


The Governor-General Medal - awarded to the grade 12 academic student with the highest aggregate including all grade 11 and 12 courses on the student's official transcript.

The Queen Elizabeth II Medal - awarded to the Grade 12 student who has fulfilled the requirements for the Nova Scotia high school completion certificate having:

  • demonstrated superior academic achievement in grades 10, 11, and 12, and
  • maintained an outstanding record in school and community involvement.

The Burchell Medal - awarded to the student who attains the highest scholastic standing in Grade 11.

G.G. Campbell Memorial Medals - This medal was donated by the staff and students to perpetuate the memory of Dr. George Campbell, who served as principal of Sydney Academy from 1935 until 1968. It is awarded to a member or members of the graduating class whose leadership qualities and high scholastic attainments single him/her out as someone special and whose record of accomplishments has a brand of excellence that is unique.

Lieutenant-Governor's Medal - awarded to one male and one female student from Grade 11 who have shown demonstrated qualities of leadership and service in the school and in the community, and who have maintained a commendable performance in the courses in which they are enrolled.

The Mould Medal - To recognize, in a special manner, the achievements of students who select to take the IB Programme, Sydney Academy has caused to be struck the Dr. William Mould Medal named after a late member of the Academy staff. Dr. Bill Mould taught at the Academy for over thirty years. During his time at the school, Dr. Mould came to epitomize intellectual honesty, self discipline, and personal dedication to educational excellence. It is fitting that the most successful student in the IB Programme be awarded the Mould Medal. The Mould Medal has been created to emphasize and highlight the persuit of academic excellence at Sydney Academy. There is no contradiction or competition between this award and any others that presently exist. The student who receives the Mould Medal may also be the recipient of other awards.
