Scholarships and Bursaries

The Sydney Academy Scholarship fund committee awards a large number of scholarships and bursaries annually. Funds for these awards are made available through the generous contributions of alumnae, businesses, charitable organizations, corporations and individuals who are interested in assisting our students. The school also has a number of trust funds which enables the committee to assist students financially.

Scholarships announced at the Graduation Ceremonies are of three (3) types:
  1. University / College;
  2. Community based bursaries;
  3. School directed bursaries.
Scholarship money distributed by the Sydney Academy Scholarship Award Committee each year will be awarded according to the following criteria:
  1. Each June the Scholarship Award Committee will meet to distribute scholarship money deemed by the Administration of Sydney Academy to be available for that school year.
  2. The Scholarship Award Committee will consist of at least one member of the Administration, at least one guidance counselor, and two to five teachers.
  3. The decisions of the Scholarship Award Committee are presented to the Principal for final consideration and approval.
  4. The decisions of the Scholarship Award Committee, once approved by the Principal, are final.
  5. School directed scholarship monies are awarded based on academic performance and contribution to school and community.
  6. In general, no scholarships are granted through the school to students with an average under 70%.
  7. A complete listing of scholarships may be found here.
To be considered for a scholarship or bursary, a student must make formal application to the Scholarship Committee at least twenty days prior to graduation. Students must also meet minimum academic requirements.

For student ranking, Sydney Academy uses the following criteria:
  1. Ten courses in total will be used to determine the average.
  2. English 12 and Global 12 are to be included in the 10 courses, as they are the only two courses ALL students are required to take.
  3. A Minimum of five grade 12 courses taken during the grade 12 year must be included in the average.
  4. Five other courses at the grade 11 or 12 level, taken in any school year, will be used in determining the average.
  5. Only one open course is allowed.
