French

Our aim over the three year program is to provide the students with a reasonable knowledge of all phases of the French language and to promote a greater interest in the appreciation of French as well as of French people and their culture.

CORE FRENCH 10 - CORE FR 10 (Academic)
Prerequisite: Grade 9 French

This course, although having a prerequisite, will involve a review of even the simplest elements of the French language. The course is intended to blend serious study with fun. Emphasis will be placed on all aspects of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Supplementary materials and activities may include music and song, biographies of personalities, and a variety of French language games.

CORE FRENCH 11 - CORE FR 11 (Academic)
Prerequisite: CORE FR 10

This course is a continuation of the program begun in Grade 10. Emphasis is placed on all phases of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

CORE FRENCH 12 - CORE FR 12 (Academic)
Prerequisite: CORE FR 11

This program is a continuation of the program offered at the Grade 11 level. As with the previous levels of the French program, emphasis is placed on all phases of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.



French International Baccalaureate Program

Please Note: IB French courses are based on the IB themes of group, changes, and activities. Students may, with permission, sit for the IB French exam, standard level, in their grade 11 year. Please see the IB Co-ordinator for more information.

FRENCH PRE-IB 10 - FRE P-IB 10 (Advanced)

This course is designed for students from a French Immersion, extended core French or Francophone background. It is designed to facilitate the acquisition of strong communication skills in the following four areas: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Materials and activities will be employed including literature, magazines, newspapers and music. A strong emphasis is placed on oral and written communication. French is the language of instruction in the classroom.

FRENCH (INT'L BACCALAUREATE) 11 - FRE-IB 11 (Advanced)
Prerequisite: FRE P-IB 10 or permission.

Students in this course should be able to communicate at a more advanced level. The reading program includes both current topics and literary selections. A strong emphasis is placed on oral and written communication. French is the language of instruction in the classroom.

FRENCH 12 IB - FRE 12 IB (Advanced)
Prerequisite: FRE-IB 11 or permission.

This course is an extension of FRE 11 IB. The students in this course should be able to both read and speak French at an advanced level. A strong emphasis is placed on oral and written communication. French is the language of instruction in the classroom.



Integrated French Program

Sydney Academy offers students an Integrated French Program. To obtain the Integrated French Certificate, students must successfully complete the French Language Arts courses in grades 10, 11, and 12, as well as one other course at each grade level where the language of instruction is French (a total of six credits of study in French).

This certificate is open to all students with an interest in French, as well as students from immersion, Integrated French and Francophone backgrounds.

It is possible to earn both the International Baccalaureate Program diploma and the Integrated French Certificate.

STYLES DE VIE ACTIFS 11 - STY VIE 11 (Ouvert)

This course is taught in French. The course content is the same as that for Physically Active Lifestyles 11 (Pal 11). This full credit course is designed to engage students in a wide range of physically active experiences, with an overall theme of exploring options and opportunities for being active for life, both in school and in their community. Physically Active Living 11 encompasses both an activity component and a theory component, with an emphasis on engagement in physical activity.

The activity component of the course is designed to provide opportunities for students in active experiences that engage youth in traditional and non-traditional forms of physical activity.

The theory component of the course will enhance student understanding of healthy eating, injury prevention, mental and emotional health, and addition prevention highlighting the connection between healthy living and being physically active.
Please note: STY VIE 11 satisfies the PAL 11 requirement for graduation.

L'ART DRAMATIQUE 10 - ART DRA 10 Academic

This course is open to students with a background in French Immersion or Extended Core French. L'Art Dramatique aims at strengthening the linguistic abilities of students studying French, through speech, movement, deriving script from text and production. L'Art Dramatique develops greater student understanding for the nuances of French language and culture worldwide.

GEOGRAPHIE PLANETAIRE 12 - GEO PLA 12 (Academic)
This course may be used to satisfy the Global Studies requirements for successful completion of the high school program. It focuses upon a limited number of key components based upon the standard themes and skills of the discipline of geography. Each unit is based upon a theme, the study of which is fundamental to an understanding of our contemporary planet position. In combination, the study of these units should help students to offer answers to the key question upon which the course is built: How did the world arrive at its current state at the close of the 20th century? Preference will be given to Grade 12 students.



Mi'Maq Language

MI'KMAQ 10/11/12 - MI'K 10/11/12 (Academic)
This is a full credit academic course in Mi'kmaq as a second language. Main components of the program include: Oral skills (basic conversational Mi'Kmaq), literacy skills (reading and writing in Mi'Kmaq), and using thematic units which incorporate Mi'kmaq cultural values, beliefs, and traditions.
Please Note: These courses do not fulfill the Canadian History requirement for graduation.

SPANISH IB 11 and Spanish IB 12 Ab Initio (Academic)
The overall objective of this course is for students to achieve communicative competence in a variety of everyday situations. At the end of the Spanish IB ab initio course in grades 11 and 12 candidates will be expected to demonstrate an ability to:
