AFRICAN HERITAGE LITERATURE 12 - AFR LIT 12 (Academic) This is an African Heritage language arts course that focuses on African heritage and encourages the use of diverse resources from all cultures and races. This course encompasses the experience, study, and appreciation of language, literature, media and communication from an African Heritage perspective. The course follows an historic timeline which includes pre-colonial Africa, Slavery, Reconstruction, Renaissance, Radicalism and into the Modern Era. Themes include social and political changes, the women's movement, visual and performing arts and the lives of African Nova Scotians and African Canadians. Note: This course satisfies the compulsory English 12 requirement for graduation. ENGLISH 10 (Academic) English 10 offers learners an opportunity to consolidate their learning from their junior high years before they specialize in grade 11. The English 10 classroom will offer abundant opportunities for students to read widely, to write frequently, to explore a wide range of print and visual texts, to work independently as well as collaboratively in small groups, and to design learning tasks that are of particular interest. ENGLISH 10 Plus (Academic) This is a two credit, 220 hour course providing students with one English 10 credit and one elective credit called English 10 Plus. Only the English 10 credit meets the English requirement for graduation. This course is for students who have experienced difficulties in English Language Arts in grades 7 - 9, and who require increased support in developing English language arts skills. Through English 10 Plus, students will have extended opportunities to increase their literacy skills. The outcomes of English 10 Plus are the same as those of English 10, as students who complete the course successfully will have met the outcomes of English 10. Students who choose to follow the English 10 Plus course of study will want to engage in learning, as they are making a conscious choice to improve their English language arts skills. Commitment to the program is crucial upon the part of the student. Again, students successfully completing this course will receive an English 10 credit that satisfies the requirement for graduation, and an English 10 Plus elective credit. ENGLISH PRE-IB 10 - ENGLISH P-IB 10 (Advanced) This is an advanced English course which is a preparation for English 11 IB. Students who wish to pursue this course should have a strong work ethic. Although the course offers much of the same material as that offered in English 10, students in the honours course are expected to read more extensively in each genre: novels, short stories, poetry. Frequent writing assign-ments and oral presentations are central to the course. ENGLISH 11 (Academic) Prerequisite: English 10 English 11 is intended for students whose goals include post-secondary study. This course emphasizes literary texts and students will be provided opportunities to select their own texts for independent study and small group inquiry. Students will extend their Knowledge base, thinking processes, learning strategies, self-awareness, and insights. Students will work in a variety of grouping arrangements, including co-operative learning groups with both mixed and similar abilities, interest groups and partner learning. ENGLISH IB 11(Advanced) Prerequisite: English P-IB 10. This course is the first part of a two year program. A good reading background would be an asset, although it is not mandatory. Emphasis will be placed on written assignments. There will also be several oral presentations. ENGLISH/COMMUNICATIONS 11 - ENG/COM 11 (Graduation) Prerequisite: English 10. English Communication 11 is intended for students who may need additional support in their development as readers, writers, and language arts. This course is intended to prepare students for lifelong learning by engaging them in practical and interesting learning experiences closely related to their lives and to the world they will experience as adults. The course will provide support to meet individual and diverse learning needs and be flexible enough to allow learning to move to academic courses. The course focuses on developing language skills necessary for the workplace. Students will engage in small group and whole class activities that help develop speaking and listening skills. After reading a variety of texts, students will create both written and visual texts to enhance their reading and writing fluency. Note: This course counts as one of the required English courses for graduation, but it is not accepted for university entrance. ENGLISH 12 (Academic) Prerequisite: English 11 This course includes the chosen reading and analysis of and individual response to a variety of literary genres from British, American and Canadian literature. Students will be expected to participate in discussion and in writing of expository and expressive essays of shorter pieces. Oral communication skills will continue to be developed. Students will be required to work independently on some projects, which include research and analysis. ENGLISH/COMMUNICATIONS 12 - ENG/COM 12 (Graduation) Prerequisite: English 11 or ENG/COM 11 English Communication 12 is intended for students who may need additional support in their development as readers, writers, and language arts. ENGLISH IB 12 (Advanced) Prerequisite: English IB 11 Emphasis again will be placed on written assignments and oral presentations. Besides works of English, five foreign pieces of literature will be covered. Several of the oral presentations will be sent to an outside moderator. Two of the written assignments and the final exam will be marked externally. LEARNING STRATEGIES - LRN ST 10(Graduation) Prerequisite: Teacher referral only. The focus of this program is study skills, time management, note taking strategies, test taking strategies, and organizational strategies. The aim is to incorporate the individual skills learned into the regular curriculum. LEARNING STRATEGIES - LRN ST 11 and LRN ST 12(Graduation) Prerequisite: LRN ST 10 or teacher referral. These courses are continuations of LST 10. The focus is on study skills and transition planning.
